Overview

Khami Ruins

These are  characterized by a series of terraced stone ruins, which are often adorned with intricate decorations. The most prominent of these ruins is comprised of three tiered platforms, which served as the residence of the King and his family. The grand front façade served as the primary entrance to this structure. In close proximity to this site, one can find the Cross Ruin, which features a mysterious stone Dominican Cross, as well as the Northern Platform, which was once utilized for gold processing.

The Precipice Ruin served as a ritual center and boasts the longest decorated stonewall of its kind. Adjacent to this site is the Passage Ruin, which consists of two adjoining semicircular platforms that are accessible via a narrow passageway. It is likely that, like many of the smaller platforms, this site was once occupied by one of the state’s elite officials.

Visitors are afforded the opportunity to explore the site via several paths, which allow them to appreciate the unique cultural and natural heritage of the area. This site is an ideal destination for those seeking to gain insight into Zimbabwean history.

Matobo National Park.

This is located in close proximity to Bulawayo, is a distinguished world heritage site in Zimbabwe. It holds the distinction of being the country’s oldest national park. One of its remarkable features is the Matopo Hills, a collection of granite kopjes that were formed over 2 billion years ago, adorned with wooded valleys.

These hills have a historical significance as well, as they served as a dwelling place for Zimbabwe’s earliest inhabitants, known as the “San,” around forty thousand years ago. Subsequently, around twenty thousand years later, these same hills became a canvas for the “San” artists, who adorned the walls of caves and rock shelters with their paintings. Remarkably, these artworks have withstood the test of time and the harshness of the climate.

Furthermore, the park offers recreational opportunities such as World’s View, a picturesque viewpoint, and the burial site of Cecil John Rhodes. The wildlife within the park includes leopards, as well as both black and white rhinos. Additionally, the park provides a scenic overlook of Maleme Dam, where visitors can find excellent camping and picnic spots.
